The Constitution of the Faculty Assembly
Article I – The name of the organization shall be the Faculty Assembly.
Article II – The purpose of the Faculty Assembly shall be to speak for the faculty on matters of importance to the University and to consider and act, or recommend action, as appropriate, on all matters affecting the academic and professional concerns of the faculty members of two or more Faculties of the University. All decisions agreed to by the Faculty Assembly must be submitted to the University Council for comment, and subsequently submitted to the Board of Trustees for review, consideration and final determination.
Article III – Membership and Voting Rights in the Faculty Assembly
All members of the faculty of the University of professorial (other than adjunct, emeritus or visiting) or lecturer rank who hold at least one-half time appointments shall be members of the Faculty Assembly.
Each Faculty Assembly member shall cast one vote.
Article IV – Chairman or Chairwoman of the Faculty Assembly
The Rector of the University shall serve as Chairman or Chairwoman of the Faculty Assembly.
In the absence of the Rector or at the Rector’s request, the Deputy Rector & Provost shall preside. When the Deputy Rector & Provost has been requested to preside over a specific item on the agenda, this shall be indicated on the agenda.
Article V – Meetings of the Faculty Assembly
The Faculty Assembly shall meet during each fall and spring semester.
Special meetings may be called by the Chairman or Chairwoman of the Faculty Assembly or by a petition of twenty-five percent of the membership of the Faculty Assembly presented to the Rector. The agenda for all special meetings shall be announced when the call is made.
Twenty-five percent of the membership shall constitute a quorum for the conduct of business.
The agenda for all regular meetings shall be established by the Chairman or Chairwoman of the Faculty Assembly. Items for consideration by the Faculty Assembly shall be placed on the agenda when requested by twenty-five percent of the membership of the Faculty Assembly.
Article VI – Amendments
Amendments to this Constitution may be initiated by a one-quarter vote of those present and voting at a meeting of the Faculty Assembly.
Amendments to this Constitution shall take effect when approved by a two-thirds majority of the votes cast in a confidential electronic or written ballot that has been returned by a majority of the full-vote equivalents represented by the Faculty Assembly, and when approved by the Trustees of the University.
Article VII – Ratification
This Constitution shall come into effect when approved by the Board of Trustees.
