The American University of Myanmar aims to become a highly-selective comprehensive research university. The American liberal arts tradition that will be the cornerstone of undergraduate study in the University has been selected because it has roots in the classical educations of many civilizations both in the east and west. It will provide students with a foundation in classic texts of many civilizations including Myanmar civilization, instill in students an understanding of the major divisions of knowledge (the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences) and afford students the means to further their own knowledge. Once this liberal arts core is completed, students will pursue further study in one or two of a variety of disciplines selected to enable the students to make contributions of consequence for the benefit of themselves, their families, and Myanmar. Post-graduate study leading to masters and eventually doctoral degrees will be added to ensure that Myanmar has people with the education necessary to assume leadership roles in the professions, business, and government service.
The academic quality of the University will be ensured by the Delaware Department of Education, recruiting experienced university administrators, highly qualified faculty members, and students with the intelligence, preparation, and motivation to succeed at the University. Faculty members with appropriate qualifications will be recruited internationally and from within Myanmar. Most faculty members will be expected to hold a doctorate from an internationally-recognized university, to have published in their field and to have evidence of excellent teaching ability.
